Septic Sense Week #1

Septic Sense Week #1

Septic systems are designed to treat and dispose of wastewater from your home. To keep your septic system working properly, you should follow these tips:

  • Know the location of your septic tank or package treatment plant and soils treatment components. This will help you avoid damaging them or interfering with their function.
  • Do not allow vehicles to drive over, or park on, any septic system components. This can cause soil compaction, pipe damage, or tank leakage, which can reduce the system’s efficiency and lifespan.
  • Do not drain downspouts, sump pumps, etc. into the septic system. This can overload the system with excess water and solids, which can clog the pipes or disrupt the biological treatment process.
  • Do not alter drainage features without consideration for impacts to the dispersal field. This can affect the soil’s ability to absorb and filter the wastewater, which can lead to surface runoff or groundwater contamination.
