The “Do Not Flush” List: How to Protect Your Septic Tank

Your septic system is a delicate biological environment. Billions of bacteria work hard to break down waste. However, flushing the wrong items can kill these bacteria or physically clog the pipes, leading to expensive backups.

Keep your system healthy by keeping these items OUT of the toilet and sink.

The “Flushable” Wipes Myth This is the #1 enemy of septic systems. Even if the package says “flushable,” they do not break down like toilet paper. They clump together and block the inlet baffles. Throw them in the trash, never the toilet.

Kitchen Grease and Oil Pouring bacon grease or cooking oil down the sink is a recipe for disaster. It solidifies in the tank, forming a thick “scum layer” that bacteria cannot digest. Wipe oily pans with a paper towel before washing.

Chemicals and Paint Bleach, paint thinners, and harsh drain cleaners kill the good bacteria your tank needs to function. Without bacteria, the sludge builds up rapidly.

Other Common Offenders:

  • Feminine hygiene products

  • Coffee grounds

  • Cat litter

  • Paper towels
