Septic Sense Week #4
- Keep the area around the septic tank and dispersal area grassed to promote evaporation and avoid erosion. This will help prevent waterlogging and soil compaction that can damage the system.
- Watch for any ground settlement that might direct water onto the soils treatment components. If you notice any signs of uneven or sagging ground, contact a professional to inspect and repair the system as soon as possible.
- Do not use a septic field as pens or pastures for animals. Animals can trample and compact the soil, break the pipes, and introduce harmful bacteria and parasites into the system.
- Do not plant any trees or shrubs on or near the bed or tanks; their roots can clog pipes. Choose grasses or shallow-rooted plants instead, and keep them well-watered to avoid root intrusion.
