Septic Sense Week #2
- Scrape dishes into the garbage instead of the sink. Food scraps can build up in your pipes and cause blockages or odors.
- Compost kitchen wastes instead of using a garburator. Garburators use a lot of water and electricity, and they can overload your septic tank with organic matter.
- Use a drain catcher to stop food bits from going down the drain. This will prevent grease and solids from entering your septic system and affecting its performance.
- Do not put cigarette butts, paper towels, sanitary tampons, condoms, disposable diapers, plastics or similar non-biodegradable materials into your septic system. These items do not break down and can clog your pipes or fill up your tank. They can also contaminate the groundwater and harm the environment.
